The Massachusetts Legislature passed a sports betting bill at the end of its 2022 session, and Gov. Charlie Baker signed it into law in August. Since then, sportsbooks have been applying for licenses, with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission overseeing the approval process. Retail betting launched in the state on Jan. 31, and on Feb. 9, the MGC director announced a tentative launch date of March 10 for online betting.
Seven sportsbooks have licenses and are set to launch at the projected time and date of 10 a.m. ET on March 10: FanDuel, DraftKings, Barstool, BetMGM, Betr, Caesars and WynnBET. Two more books (Bally Bet and Fanatics) also have licenses but plan to launch later on in May, and Betway is likely to follow in January 2024.
Once online betting does launch in Massachusetts, people will be able to begin placing wagers on some of the state’s most popular franchises, like the Boston Celtics (NBA) and Boston Bruins (NHL). And while Massachusetts prohibits wagering on in-state college teams outside of certain events, bettors will still be able to wager on the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, which starts March 14.
